Marine Flatworms are common critters along our KwaZulu-Natal rocky shores. Ranging in size from a couple of millimeters to ten or more centimeters, these incredible creatures come in a range of bright, gaudy colours that will easily capture your imagination and get you thoroughly enthused about "worms"
..... yes, we understand that getting excited about worms is tricky to even contemplate if your reference for "worms" is your garden but trust us, marine worms are incredible. On one of our recent snorkeling trips in Ballito we were lucky enough to encounter a Lightning Strike Flatworm (Pseudobiceros fulgor)
We see these quite regularly, but this one was doing something different, instead of crawling along like most worms do, this one was flying through the water. I guess swimming is the correct term, but when you see it, you will understand why we prefer to call it "flight" - this (sorry poorly edited) clip shows the incredible grace and agility of these worms.....and the cockiness of Damsel Fish :)
